Don't Shout At A Cat

If you want a happy, well-adjusted cat, here’s 10 things you should not do…

1. Shout At Your Cat

Whether you’re shouting at your cat because it did something that annoyed you or you’re shouting for another reason, you’ll terrify your cat. A cat’s ears are far more sensitive to noise than ours and loud sounds are amplified to painful levels in a cat’s ears.…

Mocha - Home From The Vet (Looking A Little Miserable)

It never rains but it pours. Ripley has an occasional habit of piddling in the bath to see what comes out of him. He must have a certain level of discomfort that prompts this behaviour, and I’ve found bloody urine in the bath on several occasions that I’ve always attributed to him (because I’ve seen him piddling there).

After Ripley had been at the vet last Friday, he was kept in the bedroom overnight to separate him from Mocha, who can be a bit rambunctious.…

Ripley On The Bed

While Ripley’s cystitis has never fully gone away, the discomfort he felt was managed by a daily dose of Metacam. He suffers from Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (FIC), a condition where cystitis is triggered from an unknown cause, but usually stress-related. What that stress factor is can be very difficult to diagnose.

However, a little over a week ago I noticed he was straining when trying to urinate and that very little urine was being expelled.…

Camera Shy Mocha

Two nights ago, I found a dead mouse outside the kitchen door. I reckon Mocha was responsible as Ripley had spent the night in.

There was little apparent damage to the mouse and it didn’t look like it had been savaged. Merely left as a present for me to find the next time I went into the garden. I’ve no problem with cats killing vermin.…

Mocha & Ripley Sleeping Together

Today was a big day for both Ripley and Mocha. It is the first time they got their annual booster shots. There was no way I was going to allow them outdoors without them first having their vaccinations. They also got microchipped.

Neither of my previous cats was microchipped, so I was curious about what was involved. The chips are bigger than I thought and cylindrical and they look to be between a 5 and 10 millimetres long.…

Ripley and Mocha

Here’s Ripley and Mocha showing some brotherly love in their new home:

Mocha and Ripley are my two new cats which I adopted from a cat rescue center when then were 3 months old (in Jan, 2014).

They’re brothers and a condition of adoption was that I would have to adopt both as they were very attached to each other.

Ripley is on the right at the start of the video and Mocha is in the left.…

Frotz Peering Through Bushes

My favorite photo of Fritz

It’s been about a week since Fritz died and I’m really missing the company of a cat. Being at a loose end, I’ve found myself looking online for people selling or giving away tabby kittens.

I’ve felt guilty doing this but then I realized that the need to have a cat is a testament to the companionship that both Fritz and Kira gave.…

There Is No Such Thing As An Ordinary Pet Cat

If you’re a pet cat person, you’ll know the above headline is absolutely true. Every one is unique in looks, temperament and personality. I’ve been fortunate enough in life to become acquainted with several cats (some of whom have deigned to live with me) who have ranged in personality from the timid to the insane and the cool aloof superior to the schizophrenic slasher.…
